2:00 – 2:10 pm. Products Offered by Indigo® Instruments

Stephan Logan

Indigo® Instruments, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, [www.indigo.com www.indigo.com]

Indigo® Instruments has had a web presence since Oct. 1994. The first products that we offered were molecular models. We still offer these products & some of them are on display today. These include:

  1. Molymod (Spiring Enterprises) and Orbit (Cochranes of Oxford) organic chemistry student sets.
  2. Components in bulk for student set customizations or building custom research/display models.
  3. Unit Large classroom set featuring 45mm diameter spheres including a giant cyclohexane.
  4. Various nanotech models including buckyball and nanowire.

2:10 - 2:30 pm. Technology Innovations of Thermo Scientific in Trace Chemical Analysis Instrumentation

Doug Sears and Alex Semyonov

Thermo Scientific, 265 Davidson Ave. Somerset, NJ 08873

An overview of the technological innovations, design principles and state‐of‐the‐art capabilities of the modern Atomic Absorption (AA), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission (ICP‐OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP‐MS) instruments by Thermo Scientific will be given with the stress on applications in food safety, environmental, and elemental speciation. The particular instrument design features will be discussed in the context of how those affect applicability of each elemental analysis technique to certain samples, matrices, and analytical goals. The most recent innovations in the design of the UHPLC pumps and PDA detectors from Thermo Scientific will be presented. The new Force Feedback Control feature of the pumps results in significant reduction of the pressure pulsation and allows for lower detection limits to be achieved. Further improvement in sensitivity, combined with better optical resolution, is gained by radically new design of the PDA detector’s optical slit.

2:30 pm - 2:50 pm. New Confocal Raman Microscope for Everyday Science ‐ From Biotechnology to Nanoengineering

Alexander Rzhevskii and Will Wihlborg

Thermo Fisher Scientific

With many years of experience in Raman and FT‐IR microscopy, Thermo Fisher Scientific has designed the DXR Raman microscope to encompass all the benefits of Raman microscopy in one powerful but easy‐to‐use instrument. The DXR Raman microscope delivers uncompromising 0.5‐micron spatial resolution and true confocal depth profiling together with the reliability, performance and reproducibility for the most demanding analytical challenges. Patented autoalignment and calibration, autofocus and automated fluorescence correction, multiple excitation wavelengths, mapping capabilities and other features make it optimal for the applications requiring the highest performance and experimental flexibility. Availability of reaction chambers and SERS protocols allows the instrument to be used for in situ analysis and trace compound detection. Examples of DXR Raman Microscope applications for characterization and study of biological cells and tissues, composite polymers, thin films and carbon nanomaterials are provided.

Further presentations may be offered by other vendors, as announced at the exhibition.
