A chalcogen is an element from group 16 of the periodic table, that is, one of oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium or polonium.[1] The name was first used in the 1930s, and is derived from the ancient Greek χαλκός (khalkos, "ore") and -γενής (genēs, "producer of").[2][3]
