Justus Liebigs Annalen der Chemie, often known simply as Liebigs Annalen or just Annalen, was one of the leading German-language academic journals in chemistry. It was founded by Justus Liebig in 1832 as the Annalen der Pharmacie. It changed its title in 1840 to the Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie, but was already generally known as Liebigs Annalen to distinguish it from the Annalen der Physik und Chemie, known as Poggendorffs Annalen. Liebig's name was not officially added to the title until 1873, the year of his death, and the journal was not issued under the title Justus Liebigs Annalen der Chemie until 1875: nevertheless, it is referred to under this name in the CAS Source Index from 1840 onwards.

Publication ceased in 1945 after issue 1 of volume 557 due to the disruption caused by World War II, and resumed in May 1947 with issue 2 of the same volume. Volume numbering ceased in 1973 with volume 766, and volumes after that are referred to simply by their year of publication. The title was progressively shortened from 1979 onwards, resulting in new ISSNs and CODENs.

In 1996, the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker sold its publishing arm, Verlag Chemie (VCH), to Wiley,[1] and along with it Liebigs Annalen. From 1998, Liebigs Annalen has been merged into the European Journal of Organic Chemistry along with eight other journals from various European chemical societies.[2]
