ISO 1750 is a standard issued and maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which defines generic names (ie, names that are not trademarks) for pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. ISO names are widely used for regulatory purposes, and also in the scientific literature.

ISO names for pesticides serve a similar role to International Nonproprietary Names (INNs) for pharmaceuticals:

  • they are relatively short, and so easily remembered and difficult to confuse with each other;
  • they are not linked to any particular manufacturer or formulator;
  • they are internationally standardized.

ISO 1750 was first issued in 1981, in English and French, and has been amended several times since then to add names for new products.
