Mcbirneyite is a vanadate mineral, a mixed vanadium and copper oxide, with formula Cu3(VO4)2.
The type specimen was discovered at the Izalco volcano (13° 48′ 47″ N, 89° 37′ 59″ W), El Salvador, in 1984.[1][2] It has also been found at the Tolbachik volcano (55° 49′ 48″ N, 160° 19′ 48″ E) in Kamchatka in the Russian Far East.[2]
Mcbirneyite is named after Alexander Robert McBirney (born 1924), a vulcanologist at the University of Oregon.[1]
