This list of pesticides is based on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) definition of a pesticide.[1]
any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying or controlling any pest, including vectors of human or animal disease, unwanted species of plants or animals causing harm during or otherwise interfering with the production, processing, storage, transport or marketing of food, agricultural commodities, wood and wood products or animal feedstuffs, or substances which may be administered to animals for the control of insects, arachnids or other pests in or on their bodies. The term includes substances intended for use as a plant growth regulator, defoliant, desiccant or agent for thinning fruit or preventing the premature fall of fruit, and substances applied to crops either before or after harvest to protect the commodity from deterioration during storage and transport.
It includes those pesticides that
- are the subject of a Pesticide Data Sheet (PDS) issued by the FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO);
It does not include products that are only used as bactericides (eg, disinfectants) although, if a pesticide has a secondary use as a bactericide, this is noted.
Some pesticides have been withdrawn from use: in these cases, the information about use describes what the pesticide used to be used for. Where information is given about approval status, this refers to approval for agricultural or industrial use. Some pesticides may no longer be approved for widespread (ie, agricultural or industrial) use but are still in use in more restricted circumstances: examples include DDT (for public health purposes) and lindane (up until 2009, for medical use). In addition, many jurisdictions (in particular the European Union) may restrict the use of individual pesticides to certain applications or crops. Data on approvals has been taken from,
- for the European Union, the Plant Protection Products Directive (91/414/EEC)[note 1] and the Biocidal Products Directive (98/8/EC);
- for the United States, information on pesticide reregistration status from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).[2]

- ↑ Subject to the restrictions in 40 C.F.R. 180.249.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 Alachlor, aldicarb, endosulfan and tributyltin compounds have been proposed for addition to the Rotterdam Convention]]
- ↑ The Stockholm convention allows the use of chlordane as a termiticide (including in buildings, dams and roads) and as an additive in plywood adhesives; it may also be used as a local ectopariticide and insecticide (medical uses).
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 5.2 Stockholm Convention from 26 August 2010.
- ↑ Usage of deet does not fall under either the Plant Protection Products Directive or the Biocidal Products Directive: however deet is listed in the CLP Regulation (index no. 616-018-00-2) and deet-containing insect repellants are subject to assessment under the Dangerous Preparations Directive (1999/45/EC).
- ↑ The Stockholm Convention bans the production of dieldrin, but allows existing stocks to be used for agricultural purposes.
- ↑ The Stockholm Convention permits the use of existing heptachlor (no new production) as a termiticide, including in houses and underground.
- ↑ Production of hexachlorobenzene as a solvant and chemical intermediate is still permitted under the Stockholm Convention.
- ↑ The production of mirex by registered parties and its use as a termiticide are still permitted under the Stockholm Convention.
- ↑ Pending approval in the European Union (under the name of phosphane).
