This list of pesticides is based on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) definition of a pesticide.[1]
any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying or controlling any pest, including vectors of human or animal disease, unwanted species of plants or animals causing harm during or otherwise interfering with the production, processing, storage, transport or marketing of food, agricultural commodities, wood and wood products or animal feedstuffs, or substances which may be administered to animals for the control of insects, arachnids or other pests in or on their bodies. The term includes substances intended for use as a plant growth regulator, defoliant, desiccant or agent for thinning fruit or preventing the premature fall of fruit, and substances applied to crops either before or after harvest to protect the commodity from deterioration during storage and transport.
It includes those pesticides that
- are the subject of a Pesticide Data Sheet (PDS) issued by the FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO);
- are restricted from global trade under the Rotterdam Convention,[2] the Stockholm Convention[3] or the Montreal Protocol;[4]
- have a CIPAC code number assigned by the Collaborative International Pesticides Analytical Council (partial coverage);[5]
- are approved for use in the European Union under the Plant Protection Products Directive[6][note 1] (partial coverage);
The list does not include
- products that are only used as bactericides (eg, disinfectants) although, if a pesticide has a secondary use as a bactericide, this is noted;
- living organisms;
- compounds whose pesticidal use is very minor in comparison to other industrial uses, for example acetic acid (approved as a herbicide in the EU).
List
Where information is given about approval status, this refers to approval for agricultural or industrial use. Some pesticides may no longer be approved for widespread (ie, agricultural or industrial) use but are still in use in more restricted circumstances: examples include DDT (for public health purposes) and lindane (for medical use). In addition, many jurisdictions (in particular the European Union) may restrict the use of individual pesticides to certain applications or crops. Data on approvals has been taken from,
- for the European Union, the Plant Protection Products Directive (91/414/EEC)[6][note 1] and the Biocidal Products Directive (98/8/EC);[7]
- for the United States, information on pesticide reregistration status from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).[8]
