| + | #Explain briefly the meaning of the following terms: Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA), Mass production, muda, carbon footprint, quality assurance, appropriate technology, resource substitution, Ehrlich-Commoner equation, environmental Kuznets curve, carbon intensity (for a nation). |
− | : Increasing anthropogenic emissions are affecting air quality and contributing to climate change. We need to understand the chemistry of the atmosphere to be able to predict the impact of this with confidence and to enable us to prevent and mitigate further changes.
| + | #(100-200 words) Is the amount of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in the US declining or increasing? What are some factors affecting this. What types of MSW are most likely to be recycled? |
− | Global greenhouse gas emissions due to human activities have grown since pre-industrial times, with an increase of 70 per cent between 1970 and 2004. World CO2 emissions are expected to increase by 1.8 per cent annually between 2004 and 2030.104 Increasing anthropogenic emissions are affecting air quality and contributing to climate change. Scientists have an important role to play in understanding the chemistry of the atmosphere to be able to predict with confidence the impact of these emissions and to prevent and mitigate further changes.
| + | #(300 words) How has our understanding of pollution changed over the last 500 years? How has this affected (a) how we design our manufacturing processes and (b) where we place our factories? |
− | To achieve this, the chemical sciences will need to:
| + | #(200 words) How is lean production compatible with the goal of waste reduction? In what ways may it conflict with waste reduction? |
− | * develop novel techniques for studying reactive molecules that occur at ultra-low concentrations in the atmosphere and are the agents of chemical change;
| + | #(Minimum of 200 words) Design a plausible procedure for QA/QC to follow for a typical product line at Acme, such as DMBTFE, to ensure a quality product that meets customer specifications. Use the process outline from problem set 2 as a description of the raw materials needed. Assume that DMBTFE is a white, crystalline solid that is stable to air and water, and of only low toxicity. |
− | * understand, through developing novel techniques for studying sub-micron particles, how aerosols form and change in the atmosphere, and their impacts on human health and climate;
| + | #(Minimum of 200 words) Describe a life-cycle analysis (based on the ISO method) for an aluminum saucepan with a silicone handle. |
− | * study geo-engineering solutions to climate change – such as ocean fertilisation to draw down CO<sub>2</sub>, or increasing the Earth’s albedo by enhancing stratospheric aerosols to modify the Earth’s climate in response to rising greenhouse gas levels – looking both at the effectiveness and undesirable environmental side-effects of these solutions;
| |
− | * develop new modelling methodologies for treating the enormous chemical complexity that occurs on regional and global scales.
| |
− | | |
− | This must be coupled with developing novel analytical techniques, such as low-cost sensors for the detecting of atmospheric pollutants (ozone, nitrogen oxides, particulates etc), which can be dispersed throughout both developed and developing urban areas for fine-scale measurement of air quality, and can be used in developing atmospheric models. In addition, technology breakthroughs will be required in space-borne techniques for measuring major pollutants, including particulate aerosols, with sub-20 km horizontal resolution and the capacity to resolve vertically within the lower troposphere.

− | ==Eligibility for inclusion in the next Release Version==
| |
− | See the release criteria. Being a test release, the number of articles is expected to be fairly small.
| |
− | | |
− | Entries that are nominated will then be considered for inclusion on releases of Wikipedia the next offline release version of Wikipedia, as outlined below. Previous offline releases include:
| |
− | *Test Version, 2000 articles, released in January 2006.
| |
− | *Wikipedia:Version 0.5 (released in April 2007)
| |
− | | |
− | | |
− | If you nominate something you have worked on, note it as a self-nomination. You may wish to receive feedback from your WikiProject before nominating an article here, or you may wish to list it at Wikipedia:Peer review. If the article is of high quality, you may want to nominate it for Featured article status.
| |
− | | |
− | See also Wikipedia:Core topics - 1,000.
| |
− | | |
− | ==The approval process==
| |
− | | |
− | The approval process is designed to be simple, as is appropriate for a test release. Approval will simply involve one member of the editorial team reviewing the article using the criteria outlined above. The reviewer must not have been a major contributor to the article. You may sign up as a reviewer for the team here. If there are quality objections raised, the nomination will be removed from this list and archived. Once the objections have been addressed, you are encouraged to renominate the article. Articles deemed by the team to fail only on the criterion of "importance" will be listed at the held nominations page, for consideration in later releases. Articles that are approved will automatically be submitted for nomination at Wikipedia 1.0 (still under development).
| |
− | | |
− | ==Disputes==

− | Visual arts project: The following were selected after discussion by the project here. I would point out the project is handicapped on the auto-selection because we have few very active editors, and do not rate for importance, nor very often for quality (the ratings VA articles have are normally Biography project drive-bys, often inappropriate, and not updated). We only rarely do GAs either, & few FAs. These would all be Top-importance & are good quality. Looking at the other submissions around, in terms of subject importance, and hit rates, I think we are being too modest & should add more later. We have also suggested a number of removals on the other page. Johnbod (talk) 20:58, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

− | :I passed all of the XXX in fashion because (a) they are very nicely done, (b) as a series of articles, they form a very good overview of the history of Western fashion and (c) they give us some coverage in a subject area where we are otherwise weak. My main gripe is that non-Western fashion is not covered at all - what were the styles found at the court of Ulugh_Beg, the Yongle Emperor, Akbar the Great or Dawit II of Ethiopia? I think perhaps the articles should add the word "Western" (or European?) into the titles. The last one in the selection also needs the citations formatting. Otherwise a very nice collection. These represent the kind of article SelectionBot may miss, because the lack of interwikis is merely due to a difference in how the material is covered - I'm sure that the French, Italian etc. Wikipedias cover this same content, they just break it down differently. You mention the problem with the decade articles - yes, perhaps it would be good if there were some summary articles. It may seem hard to describe all of C20th fashion in one article, but all subjects face this type of problem in writing overview articles, and these often make up some of our most useful content because material is shown in a wider context. Regarding jacket, etc. I think the fashion project should make an effort to bring these very basic topics up to a decent standard - they are clearly important topics, but the content in each of these looks like mainly "drive-by" content on random things rather than a coherent, comprehensive description of the topic. Thanks for a great set of nominations, Walkerma (talk) 08:26, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

− | :Fair comments, & sorry we were so late. The bot selected Han Chinese clothing and sari etc, but we don't have as much on non-european clothing, though generally these changed much less rapidly in these periods (see Fashion). − | ::Thanks for all the feedback. It's unfortunate, but I think the edits of (for example) coat (clothing) have reduced the comprehensiveness of the article over the last few months (from a historical perspective, jacket is probably best addressed as a subset of "coat"). But perhaps we need to find some editors who want to do solid research on fundamental topics like shirt. I do plan to go back through the History of Fashion series and bring the citations up to snuff; working forward through time on that, very slowly. - PKM (talk) 20:22, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

− | # <s>Konami B class, high importance. Soxred93 <small>has a boring sig</small> 15:07, 4 January 2008 (UTC). HELD to see if it improves before release date. Walkerma (talk) 05:49, 1 August 2008 (UTC) NOW PASSED BY SELECTIONBOT VIA WP:Video Games. | |
− | # iMac G3 B-High. Was unassessed when the algorithms were run. The computer that saved Apple and heralded in a new age of industrial design.--HereToHelp (talk to me) 00:09, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
| |
− | #: I'll punt this one, as it satisfies the criteria for inclusion based on importance, but it is lacking a lot of detail on the impact of the iMac on Apple, which is one of the primary reasons given in the nomination. I'll revisit this in a while, and I'll decide whether to pass or fail on quality at the time. Tito<span style="color:#008000;">xd</span>(?!? - cool stuff) 04:00, 23 October 2008 (UTC) HELD based on Titoxd's comments - though could have been categorised as FAIL on quality, but we should definitely review it next time.
| |
− | # Macintosh 128k B-High. Was unassessed when the algorithms were run. The very first Mac; the one that started it all.--HereToHelp (talk to me) 00:09, 16 September 2008 (UTC) HELD
| |
− | # Lovell Telescope GA, unrated importance. One of the largest radio telescopes in the world (and one of the largest telescopes full stop, for that matter). Mike Peel (talk) 21:42, 16 September 2008 (UTC) HELD
| |
− | # Information security Needed for providing context to the related articles. Top importance for WP:CCISTF, and narrowly missed automatic selection. No inline references but has a bibliography :) --h2g2bob (talk) 22:52, 20 October 2008 (UTC) PASS </s>
