Green chemistry, as described by Anastas and Warner in their seminal book, Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice, is transforming the way materials are manufactured. Chemical producers now routinely consider the environmental impact of their processes and products, and in fact many have embraced the spirit also, becoming genuinely committed to the green cause. When green chemistry works well, it can deliver products more efficiently (and therefore cheaply) yet with less environmental impact. Yes much needs to be done: Some manufacturers are simply obeying the rules (reluctantly), others try to cut corners or find loopholes, because they still see environmental responsibility simply as a "burden." Meanwhile, many consumers are environmentally responsible only until they have to pay more - how many would vote for a hike in gas taxes to subsidize green research?

Today's discussion will consider how best to get the message of green chemistry and green manufacturing out to people, and to change the mindset of the skeptics.
