An alkaline earth metal is an element from group 2 of the periodic table, that is, one of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium or radium. The name has been in use since the early nineteenth century, and connects the metals with their oxides and hydroxides (the "alkaline earths"),[1] less soluble in water than the "alkalis proper" (such as caustic soda) but still giving distinctly alkaline solutions.
