Nigel Wheatley obtained his bachelor's degree in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge (UK) and his PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Essex (UK). He then went onto work for six years as a postdoctoral research associate and temporary professor at a number of universities in France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. With a strong interest in chemical education, he moved into the school sector, and has taught chemistry and physics at junior high school and high school level. He now works as a science writer and consultant.

Under the avatar of Physchim62, he has been a contributor to Wikipedia for more than four years, where he has been active on the Chemistry & Chemicals project. In particular, he developed the system of machine-readable basic data for chemical compounds used on Wikipedia, as well as style guidelines for articles about chemistry. He has also worked on other areas of Wikipedia, most notably on questions of international copyright.
