A pnictogen (also spelled pnicogen) is an element from group 15 of the periodic table, that is, one of nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth.[1] The name was first used in 1950s by Dutch chemist Anton Eduard van Arkel (1893–1976), and is derived from the ancient Greek πνίγειν (pnigein, "to choke, to stifle").[2]
