Today's discussion is simply to deal with any course related issues that have arisen. I will be able to respond quickly between 2:00pm and 2:30pm, and intermittently after that time. You may continue to post points or questions here after the "official" discussion time finishes, or you can just ask me questions directly on my talk page.

Error message

Be aware that every time you edit the wiki right now we are getting an error message: "A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software (etc.). The CTS staff have supposedly repaired this, but if you get this message don't worry - the edit should still go through. Just click on "discussion" or "article" to see the edited page.

General questions

I'm assuming that since we are holding this class on the new site that the move was successful!? I have been holding back on creating a page for my case at ACME until after this move occurred. Is there anything new we would need to know about creating a page at this new location? Murphy44 14:18, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Yes, the move went through just fine. We lost a couple of demo pages from the site, that's all. All of Chem 395 (I think!) went through just beautifully. Walkerma 14:25, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Help needed with finding reliable sources on my topic

Could you suggest some other sites I could use for my paper? I've been using the library sites for my topic. J-Fed 14:12, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Help needed on uploading the paper to the wiki

From the syllabus:

"the papers will be done via the wiki, and after submission the papers will be visible to the entire class. Papers will be submitted to the wiki under the Creative Commons license and may be published more widely (though they can be deleted upon request by the student). Work may initially be done offline in word processing software such as Microsoft Word, but it should be uploaded and formatted for the wiki in order to receive a grade."

General questions

I was wondering when the 4th assignment was going to be posted/due and if it would be possible for it to be assigned for us to work on over this break? Or would you prefer us to work on only our papers this break? Murphy44 14:07, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

I was planning on posting that tomorrow, so you can work on it over break. I'm also hoping to get your last homeworks graded for tomorrow. Walkerma 14:09, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
I'd personally like the break to finish the assignment. J-Fed 14:08, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Ok great! Thank you! J-Fed 14:10, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Excellent, Thank you!Murphy44 14:12, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
For the draft report we have due on Friday is it ok if I send you a copy along with posting it on the wiki? Were you able to look at my budget sheet? J-Fed 14:15, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Yes, that's fine. You can post the Excel spreadsheet on Zoho - just browse to the file, have it expire after one month, and click on "View". Then make sure you copy the URL, and add a link from the wiki to that URL. Walkerma 14:22, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Does anyone know what hours the library is open over this upcoming break? Murphy44 14:30, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Or where I could find that information out? Murphy44 14:31, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Look here, it lists all you need. Walkerma 14:32, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Help needed with finding reliable sources on my topic

I was wondering if I could expand my paper on where ethanol can be obtained from. J-Fed 14:08, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

(Please sign in, Jesse!) What sources do you have at present? Walkerma 14:06, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Sorry about that! I have sources from newspapers and a journal article, wikipedia, britannica and some universities studies. Could I talk about sugar cane, oranges corn and other plants too? J-Fed 14:08, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Lots of things can be turned into ethanol (ask someone who makes moonshine!). You should try to find the sources that are most viable as energy sources. The USDA papers listed under Chem395:Problem_Set_2 should be helpful in ascertaining that, and you can find some more literature through those papers. Walkerma 14:12, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Ok I'll go through those then. J-Fed 14:14, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

Help needed on uploading the paper to the wiki

If for some reason I cannot upload my paper can I e-mail it to you so that you have a copy? J-Fed 14:09, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

I would recommend that anyway, just as backup. But it's very simple. You can start by doing what you just did - clicking on the edit tab, then copy and paste it into the wiki. Then you just need to format it - adding in a few extra lines to separate paragraphs, and put in the wiki type headers and lists using == and # or *, etc, and you should be all set. Walkerma 14:18, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
I'm curious as well, is this a legitimate course of action should problems arise? Murphy44 14:14, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
