ChemCOinS is a method of allowing the automatic recognition of information related to chemical substances on the World Wide Web. It works by embedding ContextObjects that identify a particular chemical substance into the HTML code of a webpage. The ContextObjects are encoded using the KEV format and placed as the title of an empty HTML span with the class chemcoins
.
ChemCOinS was developed by Nigel Wheatley for WikiChem: the current version is 0.5-2009. The name is derived from "ContextObjects in Spans" and the COinS system used to encode bibliographic metadata.
