Shcherbinaite is a vanadate mineral, a vanadium oxide, with formula V2O5. It is the mineral form of vanadium pentoxide.
The type specimen was discovered at an andesine dome on the Bezymianny ("nameless") volcano () in Kamchatka in the Russian Far East, and the discovery was validated by the IMA in 1972.[1][2] It has also been found at the nearby Tolbachik volcano (), and at the Izalco volcano () in El Salvador:[2] in all cases, it is associated with fumarole activity.[4]
Shcherbinaite is named after the Russian geochemist Vladimir V. Shcherbina (1907–78).[1]
