This is the page for Unit 8, "Mining, chemicals and materials" The principal reading is from Hill, but supported by the Powerpoint presentation which covers mining in more detail. There is also a reading from Chemical & Engineering News (C&E News), the trade journal of the American Chemical Society, on resource sustainability.

Mining, chemicals and other materials

Powerpoint includes: Mineral resources — Mining — Chemical manufacturing

  • Chapter 3 of Hill and the Powerpoint presentation deal with mining and mineral resources, showing that the amount of a mineral resource depend on the price and the economics of extraction. Details are given for many metals, including the concept of the Hubbert curve.
  • Chapter 7 of Hill deals with the material resources available from biological sources, such as biofuels and chemical feedstocks. These can be seen as renewable, but they can be land-intensive and conflict with food production.
