A lanthanoid or lanthanide[Note 1] is an element with an atomic number between 57 and 71, that is, one of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb or Lu.[1] Although lanthanoid means "like lanthanum" and so should not include lanthanum itself, La is usually included in modern usage.[1][2]

Notes

  1. IUPAC prefers the term "lanthanoid", as "lanthanide" refers to a binary compound of lanthanum with a more electropositive metal.[1]
