Seliwanoff's reagent
Seliwanoff's reagent is a reagent used to test for ketohexoses, named after Russian chemist Feodor Feodorovich Selivanov (1859–1938).[1][2] It is a solution of resorcinol in hydrochloric acid.
Contents
Reagent
The reagent is prepared by dissolving 1 g of resorcinol in 330 cm3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and diluting to 1 litre with water. The final solution is 9 mmol dm−3 in resorcinol and approximately 4 mol dm−3 in hydrochloric acid.
Test
A few drops of the solution to be tested are added to about 1 cm3 of the reagent in a test tube. The mixture is heated to 100 °C and kept at that temperature for about five minutes, then allowed to cool. The appearance of a cherry-red colouration indicates the presence of a ketohexose.
