A rare earth element, often shortened to simply rare earth, is one of scandium, yttrium or the lanthanoids.[1] These elements have very similar chemistries, and are often found together in minerals.[2] Nevertheless, they can be subdivided into the cerium group, comprising the lanthanoids from lanthanum to europium, and the yttrium group, comprising the remainder of the lanthanoids (from terbium to lutetium) as well as yttrium and scandium.[2]
