I'm Prof. Martin A. Walker, and I'm teaching this class.  I grew up in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_upon_Tyne Newcastle Upon Tyne] in northern England.  I worked for 12 years in the chemical industry [http://pcisynthesis.com/ in the US] and [http://www.fineindustries.co.uk/fol/home.aspx in the UK], and I saw both good and bad attitudes to the environment.  This led to me developing a strong interest in green chemistry, which we will cover in a later unit. If you heard [http://pluto.potsdam.edu/academicfestwiki/index.php/Green_Chemistry:_New_Eyes_and_New_Ideas_in_Science John Warner's presentation at the campus festival] recently, you'll know what I'm talking about!

In May, I graduated from SUNY Binghamton with a degree in Integrative Neuroscience. I am now applying to medical schools and in this year to come, I will be serving in an Americorps/National Healthcorps program in Northern California, which helps community health centers provides medical care and education to underserved populations. I love social dancing and playing piano.

My interest in sustainability has been developing over the course of my college career. My university offered a "Sustainable Engineering" minor to engineering students. My time speaking with students in this program sparked the growth of my interest. Living with one cemented in me a dedication to habits which reduce my wastefulness. The books which have made the largest impact on my perception of sustainability and human consumption are a book by E.O. Wilson, titled "The Future of Life" and another by Jonathan Safron Foer, titled "Eating Animals". These experiences will undoubtedly inform the opinions I share with the class in discussions to come.

I am senior at SUNY Potsdam and I am a community health major. I am from a very small town northwest of Potsdam called Malone. I really enjoy playing volleyball, softball and snowboarding during the winter. I am taking this class mainly because I need the credits, but I chose it because I am interested in learning more about global warming and what it truly is. I also chose this class because I want to learn how to "sustain our world".

Hello everyone, my name is Alex Levitz, and I proudly hail from Brooklyn, NY. I originally attended Quest University Canada (in Squamish, British Columbia), but I transferred to SUNY Potsdam in order to major in Biology (with a focus on all things microbiological, especially gene therapies and energy production applications). I have always been interested in sustainability and the preservation of our Earth’s environment, so much so that I inspired my mom to found WRAP (the White Roof Action Project, which is a nonprofit organization aimed at inspiring the adoption of white roofs on homes, thereby increasing the albedo effect). Furthermore, I am currently working on designing a solar array and green roof combination for my house, which will hopefully allow us to obtain all of our energy without relying on the grid (I am intending to utilize the new Tesla solar battery “Powerwall”, which will alleviate the issue of storing the captured energy, and having to rely on the grid at night). Thus, I am a strong proponent of sustainability, as it is indeed one of the most pertinent issues that we must address and embody if we are going to persist as a species. Abby, it is a pleasure to meet you. I bet its pretty hard to play volleyball and softball in the snow. I'm sure you must be really skilled at both to be able to pull that off. In seriousness though - volleyball is one of my absolute favorite sports to play, though I never got any good at it.

Hi Leanna i was wondering if there is a specific reason for you wanting to get your masters now. I am hoping to get my BS in Bio, is there anything you had found that you could do with just your BS?
I will be a senior at SUNY Potsdam in the fall and I am from Hamburg NY which is near Buffalo. I play on the rugby team and I am a Biology major. I am taking this class because I just added a Chemistry minor and I am interested in the new resources that are being invented to replace the non renewable resources we currently use.

My name is John Rogers. I live in Potsdam, and I am a non-traditional Philosophy/Political Science major. I enjoy kayaking, fly fishing, Senet, and racquetball, and I will be enrolling in the Masters degree program in Environmental Law & Policy at Vermont Law School next fall. I am also an intern at Save the River, a local non-profit organization which serves as "riverkeeper" to the St. Lawrence river valley.

:Hi Alexane, I was wondering do you happen to know how much of the energy in Ontario is generated via sustainable processes? For example, in British Columbia over 85% of the provincial energy is laudably derived from hydroelectric power plants. Sounds like a good internship!  Also, that area of Vermont you're going to is lovely.  I used to teach in an Environmental Science department at Johnson State College in VT, and I once attended a conference at the Law School. It's a very beautiful state.  Good luck with your plans! Martin A. Walker 21:42, 9 July 2013 (EDT)

:I am not completely knowledgeable on that subject but I found this [http://www.ontarioenergyreport.ca/pdfs/OntarioEnergyReportQ12015_Electricity_EN.pdf] online. We also have special times of day when electricity is cheaper, Ontario implemented this demand on a minute to minute basis in order to conserve energy. To be completely honest these changes have made us use energy efficiently during periods of high cost and low cost. Simple things like waiting until after 7pm to do laundry has helped us lower the price on our electricity bill. Hey, Jasmine Ruiz here. I am currently a senior at SUNY Potsdam studying chemistry. I need an elective credit in my major and this class looked pretty interesting. I chose to study chemistry because I wanted to learn ways in which to help the environment and I felt that this class is a great way to do so. Outside of studying chemistry, I enjoying running, reading and spending time with my family. I believe that sustainability is something that more people should be concerned with and I hope that this class will help inform me more so that I am able to work toward a more sustainable environment in the future.

Glad you're able to join the class, Alexane! I hope you're enjoying life south of the border. I get very enthusiastic talking about green chemistry, so you may have to shut me up! Martin A. Walker (talk) 17:14, 7 July 2015 (EDT)
Hi Alexane, I was wondering do you happen to know how much of the energy in Ontario is generated via sustainable processes? For example, in British Columbia over 85% of the provincial energy is laudably derived from hydroelectric power plants. Alexanderlevitz (talk) 19:10, 7 July 2015 (EDT)
I am not completely knowledgeable on that subject but I found this [1] online. Rodrigaf197 (talk) 17:36, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Jillian Visser

My name is Jillian Visser and I am from Long Island, NY. I graduated from SUNY Stony Brook with a BA in Psychology and then received my Masters at Dowling College in Adolescent Education and Middle School Extension in Biology. This is the last class I need in order to get certified 5th-12th in Chemistry! I am excited to take this course because it will also give me the opportunity to teach Environmental Chemistry/Science as an elective at the high school level. I teach 6th-8th grade Science and 6th-8th grade Health at a private Middle School on Long Island. This past year was my first year as a full time teacher and I really enjoyed all my students. My hobbies include playing tennis, reading, anything science-related, swimming, and going to the beach! Visserjr199 (talk) 13:49, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Good! We need more chemistry teachers, so I'm glad to have you & Leanne specializing in that. I hope you'll find the class helpful for the environmental science; although that subject covers more of the "What is happening?", you may find it helpful to learn more on "What can we do about it?" which is the focus of this class. Welcome! Martin A. Walker (talk) 17:14, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Wow you must be super excited ! I hope your make a super good chemistry teacher! Also is there a reason you didn't want to teach health anymore ?Rileytc197 (talk) 20:25, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

I also would love to work with children, hoping to teach one day when I can return for my masters in Elementary Education. I applaud you for working with middle school children as I believe is a hard age and they aren't alway cooperative. Congratulations on getting through your first year of teaching. Grant Gallagher

Hi all, my name is Grant Gallagher and I'm from Westchester County New York. I'm a soon to be senior math major at SUNY Potsdam and I took this class because it looked interesting. My hobbies include hiking, camping, swimming, DnD, and all kinds of games.

Welcome, Grant! We won't do too much math, I'm afraid, though we do cover some basic thermodynamics. Martin A. Walker (talk) 16:21, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Jasmine Ruiz

Hey, Jasmine Ruiz here. I am currently a senior at SUNY Potsdam studying chemistry. I need an elective credit in my major and this class looked pretty interesting. I chose to study chemistry because I wanted to learn ways in which to help the environment and I felt that this class is a great way to do so. Outside of studying chemistry, I enjoying running, reading and spending time with my family. I believe that sustainability is something that more people should be concerned with and I hope that this class will help inform me more so that I am able to work toward a more sustainable environment in the future. Ruizja196 (talk) 02:20, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Hi Jasmine, and welcome! I hope the class is helpful, and I look forward to discussing the environment with you. Martin A. Walker (talk) 15:44, 8 July 2015 (EDT)
Hello Jasmine, I too found this to be a very interesting elective and I am eager to learn more about sustainable resource use. Rodrigaf197 (talk) 17:43, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

I look forward to getting to know more about sustainable world chem and getting to know all of you. Fetciekm195 (talk) 22:40, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Mathew Bachmeyer

Hey everyone, my names Mathew Bachmeyer (yes with 1 T). I live in Watertown, NY, I'm a senior at Potsdam studying computer science, needing only a handful of credits and one class in the spring to earn my degree. I'm taking this course because as i said i only need a handful of credits right now, and while this doesn't pertain to my major I still find it interesting. My hobbies include reading, soccer, and running half marathons (don't think ill ever get in shape for a full). Mbachmeyer (talk) 21:54, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Hi Mathew - I hope the class meets your expectations! The world's second largest half-marathon (the Great North Run) is held in my home city, and when I lived there we often used to go and cheer on the runners. Martin A. Walker (talk) 16:21, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Hey Mathew, That's cool your in your final stretch at Potsdam. I haven't done a half marathon yet, but I plan on training for one soon as I get back up to school in the fall. I commend anyone who is able to train and complete a half marathon, it takes real commitment and discipline, so congrats. Ruizja196 (talk) 20:50, 8 July 2015 (EDT)
