This picture shows two syntheses of (-)-Podophyllotoxin, one starts from the top and the other from the bottom, and the two syntheses meet in the middle.  The first synthesis, J. AM. CHEM. SOC., Vol. 125, NO. 40, 2003, progresses from the top toward the center of the picture.  The starting material for the first synthesis is (4S)-2-(naphtho[2,3-d][1,3]dioxol-6-yl)-4-(propan-2-yl)-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazole.  The second synthesis, Org. Lett., Vol. 9, No. 7, 2007, begins at the bottom of the picture and progresses toward the center.  The starting material for the second synthesis is 6-Bromo-1,3-Benzodioxole-5-Carbaldehyde.

Summary

This picture shows two syntheses of (-)-Podophyllotoxin (structure 11). one starts from the top and the other from the bottom, and the two syntheses meet in the middle. The first synthesis, J. AM. CHEM. SOC., Vol. 125, NO. 40, 2003, progresses from the top toward the center of the picture. The starting material for the first synthesis is (4S)-2-(naphtho[2,3-d][1,3]dioxol-6-yl)-4-(propan-2-yl)-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazole (structure 16). The second synthesis, Org. Lett., Vol. 9, No. 7, 2007, begins at the bottom of the picture and progresses toward the center. The starting material for the second synthesis is 6-Bromo-1,3-Benzodioxole-5-Carbaldehyde (structure 1).
