Sodium hypobromite is the sodium salt of hypobromous acid. It can be prepared by the reaction of bromine with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution at 0 °C or lower.[1][2] It has long been known as a strong oxidizing agent in solution,[3] but the solid pentahydrate was not isolated until 1959.[2]
