This is the user page for Martin A. Walker, Associate Professor of Chemistry at SUNY Potsdam. I am currently on sabbatical, developing materials and an initial community for ChemSpider Education, associated with ChemSpider.
I grew up in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK, and moved to the US in 1992. I married an American, Amy, in 1996 so I decided to stay on in the US. I now have two beautiful daughters, aged 6 and 11.
My interests are mainly in the area of organic synthesis, particularly green chemistry. I worked for 12 years in industry in the UK and the US, and this helps shape my view of process efficiency. I am also interested in Chemical information in general, and also Wikipedia. On Wikipedia I also coordinate the project for making offline releases of Wikipedia, known as Wikipedia 1.0. I was also the chair of the recent 2010 Northeast Regional Meeting (NERM 2010) of the American Chemical Society. I would like one day to be able to perform research in exochemistry - it's out of this world!
Teaching
- Chemistry 321, Sustainable Manufacturing, is an online course based on this wiki.
- Chemistry 342, Organic Chemistry II, where students can use this wiki for work on their poster presentations.
- Chemistry 444, Advanced Organic Chemistry, where students use this wiki to write up their project on the total synthesis of a natural product.
