Getting started

First create an account

Please set yourself up with an account (see instructions) by clicking on the link on the top right. Create a suitable username and then (when you have time) a user page. If people want to contact you directly, they will leave a message on your personal user talk page, and you will receive notice of any new messages when you log on.

Some real basics

An article page (like this one) is for content, not chat. You can use pages like this to try out rough drafts of text for your poster. Click on the "edit" tab and type away. Take a look at this page (or any others) to see how it's done. Write an edit summary in the box at the bottom, then click on "Save page". You should see the new version of the page immediately! (If you don't, try hitting "Refresh" in your browser.

A discussion page or talk page is associated with a particular article page, and it is used to discuss the content of that article. If you are working with a partner, for example, you might see that your partner has loaded some text for the poster, and you can post a comment like, "I like the new text, but the picture is wrong for the text. What do you think about using a picture of a fish instead?" You then sign your comment with four tildes, ~~~~ and click on "Save page".

Don't be shy about deleting things, every version of every page is saved, you can access it through the "History" tab. If you decide you liked the earlier version of the text, just find it in the history, then save it.

Image files can be drawn in ChemDraw and saved as GIF files. These need then to be uploaded as separate files before you can use them in your pages.

For more detail, see this help page. If you're still stuck, please leave a message on Martin Walker's talk page.

Wiki protocol

As with most forms of social software, please observe some basic rules:

  • Be polite to other users. If you resort to insults or abuse, you will be banned. If you disagree with your partner, don't keep arguing, ask a third party for their opinion.
  • Assume good faith: Most people really are trying to do the right thing, they are generally not deliberately destroying your hard work!
  • Please don't vandalise pages, it spoils this space for everyone. Remember I have to assign grades to you at the end of the semester, and CTS is watching you....! A little bit of humor is OK, but please confine it to the talk pages.
  • This is a public space. Although this site has limited access at the moment, it will be opened up to the public eventually, and already there are several groups who have access. So please don't discuss intimate details of your personal life - here or on FaceBook - or they may come back and haunt you! If you want to post your email address, please do not use the @ symbol, which can be picked up by spammers - write it as something like "walkerma, with potsdam.edu as the domain name".
  • Don't use copyrighted material without permission. You may use freely anything that is public domain (such as from US govt. sites, and some Wikipedia content), and with attribution you can use anything with a GFDL or CC licence (such as most of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
  • All content here is open, available for general use under the Creative Commons licence.
