This is the page for Unit 6, "Impacts of resource use." Please read through Hill chapter 5 carefully, as well as the Powerpoint presentation.

Impacts of resource use

Hill describes the linear throughput model, and considers various specific materials such as lead and copper. He considers the effects of waste on the ebvironment, and different ways to measure it. The Powerpoint presentation supplements this with some specific information about US government regulations on waste.

Presentations

For this unit, the presentation is mainly a supplement to the reading from Hill. It gives some details on US waste regulations that are not covered in the textbook.

  • Unit 6 (Powerpoint 2003, 1.3 MB), must be downloaded. On the file page, click on the filename link near the top to download.

Readings

Read Hill, chapter 5. Read this vision statement from EPA, on the redefinition of RCRA from waste management to materials management - an approach more in line with sustainability goals. It's only a short web page; only click on the links if you're curious to explore further.
