This is the page for Unit 3 "Science and Technology" Please read through the Powerpoint presentation carefully, and answer any questions included (these are not graded, they are just to help you learn the material). This Powerpoint contains an interactive exercise on "developing a hypothesis" (not available in PDF).

Science and Technology

Includes: The role of science & technology, and their differences. The scientific method. Types of chemistry applicable to the environment. Matter, energy, laws of thermodynamics and their application.

Presentations

In the early part of this unit there is an interactive section where you perform "tests" and develop a hypothesis. This is only available in the Powerpoint version, so you should use Powerpoint (in prsentation view) for this part so you can click on internal hyperlinks.

At present (Jun 6th), the final section on energy and thermodynamics is not available. This last part should be added by late Monday.

Readings

  • Hill, chapter 2.
  • Clark and Dickson reading: Sustainability science: The emerging research program. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2003 July 8; 100(14): 8059–8061. Published online 2003 June 6. doi: 10.1073/pnas.1231333100.
