Spring 2008

Due Friday April 4th, 2008, by midnight. Please type up your answers in Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, OpenOffice Writer or RTF file format, and email to me before midnight on Friday 8th. Do not post your answers on the wiki.

  1. Explain each of the following terms in a couple of sentences: Geothermal energy, quad (energy unit), renewable energy, vertical axis wind turbine, intensive agriculture, hydroponics.
  2. Find numbers for the following:
    • How much of Japan's energy supply in 1999 came from imports?
    • What are the three major energy sources for the world.
    • What was total energy usage in the US in 2006?
    • Roughly how much land in the US is used for agriculture in 1992?
    • Where in the US is the world's largest wind farm?
  3. (~200 words) The AWEA lists six issues that are hindering the adoption of wind power on a large scale. Explain what these are, and give an example of how any one of these is being addressed.
  4. (~200 words) Describe the Conservation Reserve Program, implemented in the 2002 Farm Act.
  5. (~200 words) Discuss the pros on cons of aquaculture. Explain the role of both technology and politics in determining the success of the method for food production.
  6. (~300 words) Imagine you are an adviser from the US Dept. of Energy, and you need to convince the president to promote the expansion of renewable energy production. Choose one particular form of renewable energy, and make your case!
