  2. (~200 words) What is the outlook for nickel - are we about to run out, or do we have enough reserves and resources to last a long time? (Give specific numbers.) 3. (~150 words) Discuss the pros and cons of surface mining vs. deep mining, in terms of cost, safety, and environmental impact.
  4. (~200 words) What are the five components of the Environmental Sustainability Index? Discuss the numbers given in table 23.3 (Dorf p430), and suggest reasons for some of the trends observed.
  5. (~150) What is wrong with the traditional approach to environmental management? How can an EMS help to overcome these problems.
  6. (~300 words) You are the new minister with responsibility for managing the US mining of minerals. What changes could you realistically make, in order to bring about an improvement in the environmental record of the mining industry?
