For students
NERM 2010 is an ideal event for students to present their research, learn about career opportunities, meet their peers and hear about the latest developments in chemistry. This meeting offers a professional conference with many top researchers, but it also comes with affordable registration & campus accommodation, and a location you can drive to. We hope that you and your fellow students will come and enjoy the excitement of an ACS conference.

Present a poster
Both undergraduates and graduate students enjoy the chance to showcase their research to the wider community of chemists. NERM 2010 offers an undergraduate and graduate student poster session, part of the main poster session on the evening of Wednesday, June 2nd in the Barrington Multipurpose Room. This is where you can learn that your work is valued by the wider scientific community, and you can converse with others working in related areas of research.
Under a new scheme piloted at NERM, posters can display a colored dot to indicate your status to recruiters:
- A red dot indicates an undergraduate student looking for a graduate school
- An orange dot indicates an undergraduate student looking for an industrial position
- A blue dot indicates a graduate student looking for an industrial position
- A green dot indicates a graduate student looking for a postdoctoral position
With your permission, we will also share your name with recruiters of your choice. This will allow prospective employers to talk with you about your research at your poster.
Give an oral presentation
Experienced researchers (mainly graduate students) with significant accomplishments may choose to give an oral presentation on their research. Graduate students preparing for job interviews find that a talk at NERM is not only good for their resumé, but also great practice! Questions from the audience will be friendly and insightful, helping you to understand your work in new ways, and perhaps guide you as you prepare to publish your research.
Career guidance
Career workshops
On Thursday, June 3rd, ACS Career Services will offer a set of career workshops for those interested in planning a career in chemistry. These comprise the following
- Planning Your Job Search (9:00 AM – 10:30 AM)
- Preparing a Resume (10:30 AM – 12:00 AM)
- Effective Interviewing (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM)
Panel discussion
The St Lawrence Student ACS group is organizing a panel discussion titled Life as a Chemist: Taking a Step (or Two) Away from the Bench.
This will focus on the various areas of study within chemistry, and it will highlight exciting opportunities to undergraduates. The primary audience for this discussion will be undergraduates who are deciding on whether a life in chemistry is right for them. Different fields and occupations of chemistry will be represented, perhaps from the selection of chemists available at the NERM. It is important for students to realize that a career in chemistry involves more than “traditional” lab work.
Affordable registration
Student members of the ACS receive a very good deal on registration. For those registering by May 21st through through this secure website, member rates are only $25 for undergraduates and $70 for graduate students; student nonmembers pay $45 (undergraduate) and $100 (graduate). These rates include lunch each day (you must indicate if you are staying for Saturday lunch), as well as refreshments such as coffee.
Meet others
You will have plenty of opportunities to meet chemistry students from other colleges and universities in the region. Take advantage of this chance to network - get the "inside scoop" on the graduate schools you're applying to, or meet others working in your same research area. Alternatively - just enjoying exploring the campus and the town, and having fun while away. Friendships can be made at NERM that may shape your career or which may last a lifetime.
