This page gives information on special events outside of the main program and vendor exhibition. For a general overview of the schedule, see the conference schedule page.

Area attractions

For more details on area attractions, see Area attractions.

Potsdam is in the "North Country", in Saint Lawrence County. It is close to the Adirondack Mountains and the St Lawrence River, including the Thousand Islands. It is also close to Ontario in Canada; Ottawa and Montreal are within 2-21/2 hours drive.

Conference events

Opening reception and poster/recruiter session

For more details, see the Opening reception, poster session and recruitment fair page.

On Wednesday, June 2nd, there will be an evening reception for all attendees in the Multipurpose Room in the Barrington Students Union. This will begin with a 6pm plenary address, followed by hors d'oevres, a cash bar, and live music with faculty from the Crane School of Music. One free drink ticket will be provided with registration. The main poster session and job/graduate school fair will open up alongside.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

On Thursday, June 3rd, at 8:00pm, you can laugh and relax with a student/faculty performance of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a 2005 Tony-award winning comedy musical. Free for all registered attendees.

Breakfast with with ACS Governance

On the morning of Friday, June 4th, there is a chance to meet ACS officers over breakfast from 7:30am-8:30am. Officers attending this event will include Neil Jespersen, District 1 councilor.

Awards banquet

On the evening of Friday, June 4th, there will be a banquet (ticket only, $30) in Thatcher Hall. This will include lovely food and a short award ceremony, where we will recognize around five winners of regional awards. See Award nominations for details of the awards to be presented, and to make nominations. After the banquet, there will be a free concert with musicians from the Crane School of Music.

Music by the Crane School of Music

On the evening of Friday, June 4th, there will be a performance by the Aria Reed Trio, from the highly regarded Crane School of Music. This will be in the Dunn Theatre at 8:00pm, following the Awards banquet, but (unlike the banquet) it will have free entry. There will also be incidental music at the main poster session on opening night.

Visit to SunFeather Soap

At 9am on Saturday, June 5th, there will be vans or buses leaving campus to give a tour of the SunFeather handmade soap factory. The $12 cost will be collected on the day of the event. SunFeather Natural Soap Company is located on the outskirts of Potsdam. The soaps make very attractive gifts, and have been featured regularly on "Oprah". The tour should return to campus around 10:30am. A SunFeather brochure has been provided by the company and is available for download (PDF, 2.1 MB).

Workshops

On Thursday, June 3rd, a day-long series of career workshops will be provided by trained staff from ACS Career Services. These will cover "Planning Your Job Search," "Preparing a Resume," and "Effective Interviewing."

On Thursday, June 3rd, the St Lawrence Student ACS group is holding a discussion titled Life as a Chemist: Taking a Step (or Two) Away from the Bench with a diverse panel selected from our invited speakers.

We regret that Saturday's Leadership Training workshop has been cancelled.
